Bissel Garden is a 2.5-acre community garden and four-block public path in the Wakefield section of the Bronx bringing people together, beautifying the neighborhood, creating safe outdoor space, offering community gardening and growing food for donation. Bissel Garden was the first community garden in the northeast Bronx and we are proud to have served the community for more than 25 years.
The community “rescued” the property, managed by the MTA, when the area along the train yard became a dumping ground and a community eyesore. By planting trees, shrubs, flowers and vegetables the area became an oasis for community gardeners, playing children and summer strollers.
The Bissel Children’s Garden is devoted to young gardeners and offers environmental and educational programs.
The Bissel Community Garden has approximately 30 beds available for folks that want to “Community Garden” This is an Allotment Garden and interested gardeners are encouraged to request as bed as soon as possible as they tend to be taken quickly. Individual plan and plant their beds as their heart’s desire so there’s always lots of diversity and lots of sharing.
